“Online school won’t work if I don’t have power,” said single mother of six children Channa Jackson, who fights to stay awake after logging in her children into virtual school in various stages of alertness on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2020, at her home in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood. From left to right are her children Stephanie, 12, Lamar, 11, Mekiya, 6, and Zakoria,7. Jackson just enrolled her children in school in the final days of September, more than a month night, after a swing position became available at her new job at Wendy’s. The kids school attendance fluctuates. They can stay focused in the virtual classroom for about 20 minutes, Jackson said. “After a while, I just think they get tired of it. Kids don’t want to be on the tablet. They fall back asleep.”
